Haven't watched The Expanse myself, but I'm actually not much of a sci-fi person either...

Star Wars is its own category for me. It's not sci-fi, it's Star Wars!

Well, to be fair, Star Wars is science fantasy rather than science fiction. With the magic Force and the inexplicable physics of a lightsaber. And science fantasy tends to be more fun than science fiction to me because it doesn't care about being close to hypothetical correctness.

That and science fiction that isn't about the science. Like Cowboy Bebop, which is character driven, and the science fiction is only used as a vessel for the story rather than the story relying on the science. If you could remove the science fiction aspect of a story and set it in a contemporary world with it still being entertaining, that's the type of science fiction I like.

I know what you're getting at, but this phrasing makes no sense. I think you're going for sci-fi-fantasy; y'know, cause fantasy and high fantasy are fiction too >__>

Star Wars and Firefly are genre mashups, which I find makes them a lot more accessible to me. I can't really explain it, but I'm just more interested in magical settings than technological. The more the technology resembles magic (e.g. Fallen Dragon or The Truth Machine), the easier I find it to invest in the story.

I suppose it was kind of Firefly if we're thinking of the same plotline. It might have influenced things but I don't think I actively pointed out in my mind what I stole. Cowboy Bebop might also have had slight motivators but nothing overt in my conscious mind.

I think, for me, it's the vagueries. Maybe I just find too much description boring? I'm trying to remember the classic novel I read for a book club that I just found painful to get through.... I'm drawing a blank.

I used to do level one support for a mobile phone company. That was bad enough.

Undead? What ever happened to good old skeleton warriors? They can use more weapons than zombies anyways.
