You're not missing much from 4e. It was basically World of Warcraft on paper. They did it to try to draw in people who played WoW. Course they didn't think, why would someone play WoW on paper when they can just play WoW instead?
5e from what I have been told has been simplified a lot. A friend of mine runs a campaign for his kids and their friends. One of his kids is autistic too but he learned to wait his turn. The kids are age 8-13 if that gives you any indication on how easy it is to pick up now.
They give you some sort of bonus with every level up. They got rid of the advanced classes and requirements and stuff that they had before. You just level up in a class and at some point you can branch off into 1 of 3 paths. I still haven't really got a chance to play myself yet.

Just an FYI the outside wedding the thread has been... streamlined or retconned, there was confusion and stuff happened and it was bad. I just don't have the mental energy to sort out the mess that it could become, so it never really happened, or well it was all too crazy to sort out the particulars the end.
