Actually one thing I have been wondering... from a crunch perspective the system wasn't quite they wonkiness I expected.

I still feel mechanically Yslane isn't very well built, considering the crazy dice pools some of the more experienced people made. I am just curious what exactly people were doing. Skills, specs, traits?

There are many schools of thought to building effective characters in FFG Star Wars.

The one I subscribe to comes specifically from the tabletop group mindset. Each PC should have something they excel at, a back up, and then allow the rest of the group to cover things.

I designed Durasay around this, because Craw and Nudimsu asked me to play a face for their group. So I put a Four into Presence, then upgraded my agility to 3 to have a decent ranged attack, and back up piloting, and the cunning to 3, just in case I actually needed to lie.

The general consensus on the internet/FFG Forums/Reddit is to spend your initial character XP on your Attributes, as that is the only time you can directly raise it with XP. Skills/Talents/Force powers are relatively inexpensive compared to attributes, so it's easy to justify purchasing those during game play, especially since higher attribute rolls tend to be okay for most things.

+1 to what Durasay said.

It's hard to find a good crunch when you're new to the system (I was completely new to it last game too), but from what I've seen and in my own experience, it's best to figure out early on which Attribute is going to be the most important to you and raise to *at least* 4 in Character Creation.

Similarly to Durasay, Shaisha was made to work with two others; Sylvain and Kristal. Kristal is the tough tanky warrior, while Sylvain is the face-role, so I figured I wanted someone sneaky and flexible. Cunning 4 and Shien Expert I felt provided me with being relatively flexible in what I was capable of: since Shien uses Cunning for Lightsaber-checks (so I can be fighty), get things like Stealth and Skullduggery as Career skills (so I could be rogue-y), and the top-line of the Shien Expert tree have cheap utility-talents (removing Setbacks on various Skill checks).

I know I was encouraged to have a 4 at character creation and it worked out fairly well. I probably spent a little too much on skills at character creation, which had good and bad sides.

I suppose my real mess up was picking a pretty lackluster tree. It worked more or less for what Z was doing, but if I could go back i would probably change it up. That's learning and all for you though.

The talent tree system drives me up the damn wall in this system. Overall, I find the whole system to be very limiting.

I'm currently on my third concept of where I'd like to take Cole.

If it helps, I thought that Yslane was pretty darn competent. There's a reason that, past the midpoint of the game, I was inviting you along to every darn thing that happened. Well, a couple of reasons, but your 4 Cunning and good skill spread certainly helped.

If you are out, I'll miss having you around! Yslane was a great character, and you're always fun to play with, as well.

I think mechanics wise I went too generalist. I ended up kind of ramshackle, some Shien, some Shadow, and only two skills at 2. I think a simpler or more focused idea would have been better for a first build....but them's the breaks. I find the system interesting enough to fiddle with.

Force powers also feel less useful at 1 FR unless they add to a roll or can be committed. But that is probably the intent.

I actually came away feeling that skills over two were kinda over compensating. I only had two at three mind you, but in the end they didn't feel much more effective then the skills I had at 1 or 2.

I think having those 30 exp in talents would of been nicer...

I do agree with Cole about talent trees though. They can be kinda frustrating. :P
