(D2 EE Event) Dead Man's Secrets

Event Type: Bonus
Participants: 10. Characters who signed up for the job "Another Big Break" take precedence in taking up slots. If you are not participating, I encourage posting in here that you are not.
Timeslots: Early Evening

Scrutiny: -0.1 for each Republic/Empire participant.
Description: Aris N'ventas may be dead but his connections and powerbase are not. Rather than investigate his death, you may choose to take advantage of the chaos his passing has caused and either try to seize control and resume operations or take his money and run. Each character will do so individually and the overall integrity of the operation will be dependent on how many people choose to keep it whole or not.

Rules: As explained above, you have two main approaches, each with 5 sub-options. Each sub-option (e.g. "Stop Looters") can only be selected two times total by the all the participants. Note also that each participant can only choose one option for the event. There is simply not enough time to do more.

Assume that each Advantage/Threat deals with Strain unless stated otherwise. Triumph will either make you succeed even if you ended up with more failures OR allow an ally who chose the same category (power or money) to reroll their check.

Consolidate Power: The player characters are not the only ones at the scene. Damage has already been caused to Aris' former operation but it can still be saved with enough effort.
    The following two options require Cool (Presence) or Discipline (Willpower) at Average Difficulty. This represents not allowing the ensuing chaos to distract you during your work. Success grants a Boost Die and Failure grants a Setback Die.
  • Mechanics (Intellect) at Hard Difficulty. This represents repairing the damage caused by looters.
  • Computers (Intellect) at Hard Difficulty. This represents maintaining databases.

    The following two options require Underworld (Intellect) or Streetwise (Cunning) at Average Difficulty. This represents knowing whom you are working with. Success grants a Boost Die and Failure grants a Setback Die.
  • Negotiation (Presence) at Hard Difficulty. This represents taking in the Gain 1 Boost Die if you have prior connections to any criminal organization. Gain 1 Setback Die if you are a member of the Republic or Sith Empire.
  • Coercion (Willpower) or Leadership (Presence) at Hard Difficulty. This represents rallying those who were formally under Aris' employ. Gain 1 Boost Die if you have claimed a bounty before this event.

    The following option involves combat. This has a chance of harming you. Roll Resilience (Brawn) at Average Difficulty. Baseline Damage is 5 Wounds before soak. Each Success/Failure reduces/increases the damage by 1. A Triumph means you take no damage.
  • Any Combat Skill except Gunnery at Hard Difficulty. This represents fighting off looters and returning their stolen goods.

Extract Credits: As noted above, the player characters are not the only ones partaking in looting. The prize is less lucrative than it would be otherwise but you can still salvage some money.
  • Coercion (Willpower) at Hard Difficulty. This represents forcing other looters to give you their stuff. Gain 1 Boost Die if you have claimed a bounty before this event.

    The following option require Cool (Presence) or Discipline (Willpower) at Average Difficulty. This represents not allowing the ensuing chaos to distract you during your work. Success grants a Boost Die and Failure grants a Setback Die.
  • Computers (Intellect) at Hard Difficulty. This represents slicing into bank accounts and siphoning them.

    The following two options require Perception (Cunning) at Average Difficulty. This represents finding valuables to loot. Success grants a Boost Die and Failure grants a Setback Die.
  • Skulduggery (Cunning) at Hard Difficulty. This represents picking locks on safes and other niceties.
  • Athletics (Brawn) at Hard Difficulty. This represents tearing apart the place and finding goods.

    The following option involves combat. This has a chance of harming you. Roll Resilience (Brawn) at Average Difficulty. Baseline Damage is 5 Wounds before soak. Each Success/Failure reduces/increases the damage by 1. A Triumph means you take no damage.
  • Any Combat Skill except Gunnery at Hard Difficulty. This represents fighting fellow looters and taking their goods.

Rewards/Outcome: Based on the choices above, you will either receive a share of the powerbase or credits. The powerbase will be rated on a scale of 0-10. It starts at 0 and 1 Point gets added for each person who succeeded at keeping the powerbase together. The extent that this scale matters is to be seen.

For money, the payout rate is 1000 credits baseline at 1 Success. Each additional success grants 200 more credits. Each Advantage/Threat adds/subtracts 100 Credits, though the minimum amount is 0 Credits (meaning you will not pay out of your own pocket if you fail with a bunch of threat). A Triumph grants, in addition to the success, 500 extra credits.

You may regain 3 Strain or 1 Strain and gain a Boost Die on the next roll (Skulduggery or Athletics). However, for failing the Perception roll you also gain 1 Setback Die.

It was all fun and gams until your potential employer was murdered in cold blood. Jo'ren took to the streets to see the damage and decided that rather than a quick call grab it made more sense to help restore the power base. Maybe that way they could continue the job as intended.

The looters were out and fiesty, getting in a well-known placed hit before his twinblade came out. They surged to try to drag him down, but his superiors skill ensured they died dramatic deaths. His whirling distraction gave Hala an opportunity to work unhindered towards the same goal.

Hala arrived on scene as soon as she heard that there had been an attack. Despite the ruin, she set about reverse engineering Aris' contacts beginning with the two guards she had met prior to now, then from there one of his fixers. She confronted the woman who refused to talk until the colonel pointed out that if introductions we're made, someone with imperial backing might be able to salvage part of the network and provide a measure of protection.

She had seen one target settled her first day planet side, and you see that Sith over there? Yes, the angry one. He is who would deal with them once she found them. No soft touch, no quarter.

For being a risky business, most criminals are risk averse. Halas new cohort was no exception.

There was chaos...but Baes had seen far worst in her days at the Academy. It was stressful but she could reach the main servers: for a slicing operation the data was worth more then anything else.

The chaos after N'ventas' death was ideal for what she needed. Dressing in overalls and carrying an officious looking datapad, Varra slipped into the facility posing as a computer tech and got access to the server room.

Hastily, Varra hacked her way into the databases and granted herself privileged authentication codes, looking anxiously over her shoulder all the while in fear of the security guards detecting her ruse. But getting access to Aris's private data was worth the risk, she judged.

Please recall that the Coercion/Leadership, Combat, and Computers checks for Consolidating Power are all filled up. The two remaining options for Consolidating Power are Mechanics and Negotiation. Looting for Credits is all fair game.

Adrianaa reaches up and shuts off her communicator and makes her way to a warehouse. She knocks twice and when the door slit opens, she states

"Swamp Dog would like a meeting. Now."

The door opens and she walks in and evaluates the scene before stepping onto a raised loading dock and clears her throat.

"People, your attention. Today your leader was murdered, but do not forget what he stood for. There are many who would see his work burned to the ground, his legacy ruined, and his assets drained. I am here to tell you to resist those people. Stay together as a team. Let me guide you. I have many connections, and working together would provide much more fruitful in the long run than a quick asset dump and credit grab ever will..."

Aris' warehouse was beginning to come together. Jo'ren and Craw warded off most of the looters (with Arsele getting by them) while Durasay and Hala got the staff back in line. Varra and Baesal were able to maintain everything that was on the surviving servers while Nudimsu attended to the mechanical needs. Shaisha also tried to do so but that did not go as planned. Finally, Adrianaa was able to uphold some of his old contacts before they fully backed out of the deal.

The plans for his next big heist were locked deep inside. It appeared that the dead man did not even trust his own association (the margins included mention of hiring outside, new crews for that express reason). As he had mentioned, the target was a Czerka facility not too far from Nar Shaddaa itself, the location secluded from general travel. Throughout the documents were several mentions of the target. Project: Evolution. Unfortunately, the files of what it exactly was were corrupted beyond repair due to the damage. However, there was an addendum that it required many live 'subjects' be taken to the facility.

Also included were a list of buyers. But it was clear that Aris referred to all of them by pseudonyms in preparation for situations such as these. But whatever Project: Evolution was, it appeared that anyone was interested in it. Galactic Republic. Sith Empire. Criminal organizations.

Reward/Outcome: Arsele gains 900 Credits! Powerbase is set to 8! The operation is relatively stable though your lack in resources and some contacts have backed out of the deals. Feel free to post in here for RP purpose.
