As for connections, Zan has been working on and around Nar Shaddaa for the past 3 years, before that people with the Republic might have reasons to know him.

Though, those connections would probably be a bit old. Currently he is known as a freelancer, and he takes all kinds of odd jobs.

If anyone wants a connection with Zeno, I'm open for it. Probably would be more rivalry/adversarial for Republic side. Did spend some time on Dantooine attacking Jedi/Republic holdings there with Darth Zash if you want a reason to dislike him. And Deathwrights are not above outreach to neutral parties who are excellent pilots.
