Yeah, fours are nice...

I had to endure with threes and a smattering of random skills at one point. I was building with the L5R mindset so that my dice could explode, clearly.

I don't know, boost dice....which seem mostly talent tree based....and setback removal both seemed more useful than I thought... maybe more useful than an upgrade. I think physical inspection of the dice would help figure that out.

Shai only has two skills at 2, as well, and one she started with at 2 from Race + Background, so I never really had to invest in it. The other is Lightsaber. So I got my most important Sith skills at 2, at least? :D

Shai also didn't get a 2nd Spec until the end of this game, as buying a second spec is rather pricey, so she was able to stay focused on the Force powers I wanted to at least open up as well as some of the more important Lightsaber Talents (Parry, Reflect, Improved Reflect).

I find the Talent-system interesting, but it REALLY depends on your Tree. I'm lucky that the two Trees I've picked (Shien Expert and Seer) are very good and have a pretty amazing layout. Other Trees aren't as lucky (poor Z... that Tree is really terrible T_T). So the setup of some Trees is a big gripe I have with the system.

Sure, there are often times I regret having invested in Cunning 4, as I suck at almost every other attribute... like, it would be really nice to have a higher Agility, Presence, Brawn, or Intellect! But the times I see I get to roll Cunning as my attribute, I'm a happy camper, so it eents out. :D


@Cole: I find that it isn't always nescessary to spec into a new Tree unless you find the Talents vital to round-out your build.

I'd have to agree with you there Yslane, why I was really happy to get accurate on my blaster. It seemed like a step in the right direction.

As for setback removal, they seem better in some cases then others?

@shai: yes I'm getting out of it asap. Just trying to finalize where. I have a secret hope that some splat book stuff will be allowed next game.

Yeah in hindsight splitting between 2 trees was not the best plan. But I didn't invest in brawn so I knew I needed to move the stat for stabbing in case of combat.... which most fights I was in ended before I did anything.

If I was rebuilding Yslane, I would focus on Shadow and just accept being sneaky not fighty.

What spec did you use Z?

One that confuses me is Commodore, not sure what they do. Their stuff doesn't feel very 'space tactician'

I feel that, roughly, you don't need to have your skills at more than approx 50% of your characteristic. 2P+2A or 3P+2A is more than enough.

Shai: I was picked up Computers and Know: Underworld as non-career skills, I had been intending to continue in that direction, and Slicer would have made them both career skills instead, but I changed my mind. I'll continue with just the 1 proficiency die, my int makes up for the rest.

Cole-bot, who was my attempt at re-building Cole with a better understanding of the system has Doctor as a cross-career specialisation, even though it's his primary focus, because being a Technician, with the computer and mechanics possibilities it opens up, was far more flexible.

With the end-game XP, Shai's not split between Shien and Seer, but I feel that works well since the Trees synergize fair enough all while filling out different purposes. Will continue with Shien for all my combat-upgrades, and Seer for all my "powerful Sith"-upgrades. :D


EDIT: I will say though that for Force-users... Sense's combat upgrades is perhaps one of the most solid things to pick up, even if fighting isn't going to be your main-thing. Simply because the combat-upgrades are fairly straightforward and give a lot over 40 XP (not counting the Base cost of 10 to learn Sense to begin with). All the Force Powers are pretty cool and useful, but I find Sense to be one of the really solid ones.

@Yslane: smuggler/scoundrel.

Its a hard tree to get into, as you only have 2 paths to the bulk of your talents and they are opposite sides of the tree. Add in many of the talents are really lack luster, especially in a pbp game, and you end up like me...

Staring at it trying to find the most cost effective way to skip half of it.

The Sense upgrades also let you commit for their combat stuff. Commit seems to be a big deal, remove randomness for benefit. And Force Rating is the bottom of the non combat talent trees.

Well, if you're not using that Force die for anything else (like badass combat-powers like Battle Meditation, Bind, Unleash/Protect, some of the last upgrades to Enhance, or Move with combat-upgrades), you might as well commit it! :D

Yep, as is Bind. Protect/Unleash is FR3. ;)

Thing is, with FR1, you're limited to what you can actually use that one Force die for in combat, so I find that committing to Sense is a good investement. Especially if you take the last upgrade which allows you to upgrade your attack roll.

Honestly, I do look forward to not being a Space Wizard next game, because yes the Force-stuff is a whole new layer of "I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH XP FOR ALL THE COOL SHIT!". :lol:

Just statting up my Sniper for the next game, I was able to have decent attributes across the board, skills worth mentioning, and lots of Talents. It was weird. Weird, I tell you!

It's the same structure as the Slicer tree. You have no choice but to drill down to bottom level because someone thought it would be smart to put all the connections at the bottom.

I feel like the beta testers for this game were all blind goatherders.

Was there a particular talent you wanted from the Scoundrel tree?

At the time I was looking at convincing demeanor alot. Side step is what I want from the combat side, dedication on the other side, and maybe the reroll. For deception. Honestly not enough for the trouble I think.

My Smuggler build was going to be a Scoundrel. Yeah surprisingly few bonuses for what is in theory the social rogue.

Yeah...

It's a bit of Jack of all trades master of none. And I forget what dapper ruled black market contacts did. I think he revised it a bit? As this game it wasn't doing much.

Smuggling compartment is also kinda iffy in the pbp setting. At least imo.

@cole. 25 points for quick strike is really a hard sell though. And the talent next to it is pretty sub par as well, there are better ways to spend destiny.

My plan was to pick up the 2 ranks of side step, then go down the left side of the tree for dedication. Which seems a bit meh still....
